For thousands of years, Brass gong has been used as instruments for celebrations, shamanic healing, and as a means of communication. Generally speaking, gongs are one of three types: Suspended brass gongs are roughly flat, spherical metal discs that are suspended vertically by a cord that is threaded through holes near the top rim. Bossed or nipple brass gongs are frequently suspended and played horizontally. They have a raised center boss, or knob. Bowl gongs are shaped like bowls and sit on cushions. The latter could be categorized as falling under the bell category. Although many other alloys are used, bronze and brass are the primary materials used to make gongs.
