Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of learning, wisdom, music, and art. She is the embodiment of knowledge, and paying homage to her is regarded essential before beginning on any endeavour, auspicious.  Saraswati occurs in the Vedas as both a river and a deity. Her four hands are indicative: the pustaka (book) represents knowledge, the mala (beads) indicate meditation power, and the veena (instrument) represents creativity. She is also seen in some pictures holding a pot of water, which represents purity. Her vahan is either a peacock or a swan, and she is generally shown alongside a running river.
